Prince Harry and Meghan Markle considered moving to New Zealand on their 2018 visit to the country.

According to The Queen's representative in New Zealand, Governor general Patsy Reddy, a year before splitting from royal duties to move to the US, they had considered elsewhere as their main stay.

Patsy said to The Guardian: “I remember they’d just been down to the Abel Tasman national park when we sat down and had a drink, and they said that they could imagine living in a place like this and wondered whether we thought it would be theoretically possible. Even possible for them to have a place in New Zealand.

“Of course, we said sure. It would be fine. There are lots of opportunities to live in New Zealand, but that would be something that they’d have to explore,

“They were looking at how they might raise their family. And, obviously, they’ve made some decisions since.”

Reddy, 67, will be leaving her five year term as The Queen’s representative in October.

Reddy has said that she didn’t believe Harry, 36, who was recently seen juggling in the background of a video, and 40 year old Meghan’s interest in the country to be a formal request so much as an informal discussion, having been impressed by their interactions with New Zealanders and the availability of outdoor space.

Harry and Meghan split from the Royal Family in 2019 and moved to the US, moving into a home in California.

In an infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year, Meghan had said that they had offered the Firm to step away from royal life and move to a Commonwealth country like South Africa or New Zealand.

Patsy said that she had seen the interview but didn’t have any comment on the Royal Family’s business, saying: “I thought they were a lovely couple and I hope they’ve got a great future where they are”.

Harry and Meghan have seen large success after moving to the US, having had the interview with Oprah Winfrey go on to a successful Apple+ show The Me You Can’t See and a deal with Spotify.

Meghan has since released a children’s book called The Bench and both will be writing books after securing a publishing deal with Penguin Random House late last month.
