Nick Knowles is facing being axed from DIY SOS after 21 years on the programme, according to reports.

The 58 year old, who looked unrecognisable with a bushy beard as he stepped out in London last year, fronted a Shreddies cereal advert, breaching the strict BBC rules.

TV presenter Nick plays the part of a builder in the footage as he tells a man he constructed the hospital he was born in, before saying, "when things get tough, don't eat soft" and pouring Shreddies into his hat.

Now, sources have said the star is in "absolute torment" over the prospect of losing his role on DIY SOS after breaking the broadcasting giant's rules around advertising.

“Nick is in absolute torment about the whole situation because he loves the Beeb," the insider said.

They continued: “But they have very strict guidelines when it comes to their talent and advertising and he has already broken them by filming the ads. But Shreddies don’t want to pull the campaign.

“While Nick is technically a free agent, he appears to have used his connection to DIY SOS in the advert which is totally out of order in the eyes of the BBC."

“Nick has basically been handed an ultimatum and the decision may already be out of his hands," the source added to The Sun Online.

The BBC and Nick shared a joint statement to OK! Online, explaining: “Both the BBC and Nick are keen to resolve this matter and are working together to seek a solution.”

Nick, who previously paid a heartbreaking tribute to a father who appeared on the show after his son passed away, started his DIY SOS journey back in 1999 and the show has since become a fan-favourite.

Each episode sees a team of builders and volunteers work hard to transform a home of a person nominated by their nearest and dearest.

Speaking about the programme, Nick previously said: "People ask why I’m never crying at the end like everyone else. In fact I do, just away from the cameras.

"I don’t think that moment should be about me.”
