Poldark actress Eleanor Tomlinson is set to star in Sky One’s new out-of-this-world sci-fi series, Intergalactic and she’s undergone a pretty extreme makeover for the role.

Most of us are used to seeing Eleanor flaunt her girl-next-door beauty, but in a new Intergalactic snap, she looks unrecognisable as she portrays “morally bankrupt drug addict,” Candy Sov-King.

With matted hair, heavy, dark eye makeup and a downright terrifying double tongue, Eleanor’s new role is definitely a departure from what she’s used to. Speaking about the role, Eleanor said: “It’s so nice to do something different. I’ve done a lot of period drama, but it’s part of what drew me to Intergalactic.

“It was again, another time period, but set in the future and totally different from other stuff I’ve done.

“It was nice to lose myself completely in a character and it’s amazing to be able to take on something so completely different.”

The change in direction also means Eleanor doesn’t have to wear her usual traditional garb on set everyday. Candy’s wardrobe is much more laid back than that of Poldark’s Demelza or The Nevers’ Mary Brighton.

But is the actress glad she doesn’t have to squeeze into a corset every day?

“I get asked that question all the time and I actually didn’t mind wearing a corset!” Eleanor admitted.

She continued: “I think it’s one of those things that you put on to become a character. Of course, you stand differently as when you put a corset on you are immediately restricted in your movements, so it worked very well for that period and time.

"But it’s great because I can eat what I want at lunch time and it’s fantastic. It’s much more comfortable to not wear one.”

Intergalactic follows the journey of Ash, played by newcomer Savannah Steyn, who is wrongly accused of a serious crime and exiled to a prison planet in the far reaches of the galaxy.

The action-packed drama boasts a star studded cast including the likes of Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Natasha O’Keeffe and Craig Parkinson.

When asked how she felt working with a line up of such established actors, Savannah said: “Going on set for the first day was very scary, because a lot of the other actors are very experienced.”

However, it seems her nerves were eventually calmed and she made the most of every second.

“I have learnt so much! From day one where I saw Sharon losing it as Tula so close to me and Eleanor sticking out her tongue.

“I learnt a lot from just watching them at the beginning and how brave they are at saying ‘I don’t think this feels right,’ and figuring it out. They’ve all been really supportive from day one.

“It feels very surreal to get an opportunity like this and it’s a huge blessing. To get to do any of these scenes, it’s learning and working but it’s been a massive blessing.”
