The real reason Gavin Newsom and Kimberly Guilfoyle divorced

Kimberly Guilfoyle and Gavin Newsom married in 2001, in what appeared to be a promising relationship as political superpowers. When they became the mayor and first lady of San Francisco, Harper’s Bazaar did an 8-page spread on the two, calling them “the New Kennedys” and claiming their marriage would be “one of the most glamorous political unions since Jack and Jackie,” (via The Washington Post.)

But that glitz and glamour tarnished quickly. According to The Washington Post, “the couple seemed to treat each step of their careers, and each other, as a means to an end.” Aaron Peskin, a longtime city official, said the high-profile Mr. and Mrs. “felt like they were passing through.” That sentiment may be right.

According to The Washington Post, only three days after Newsom was sworn in as mayor, Guilfoyle flew to New York City to start a new job as a host on a show for Court TV. This was in 2004, and by 2006, they were divorced.

Newsom & Guilfoyle attempted a bi-coastal marriage

Big changes aren’t necessarily a bad thing to Kimberly Guilfoyle. “I am always changing and doing stuff,” she told The Washington Post. “Grass doesn’t grow too long under my feet. I’m on the move.”

Guilfoyle and Gavin Newsom announced their divorce in a statement issued by the San Francisco City Hall mayor’s office: “Unfortunately, the demands of our respective careers have made it too difficult for us to continue as a married couple. Over the past 10 years, we have developed a tremendous bond of love and respect for each other. That will never change.” (via SFGate)

A friend of the couple said Newsom and Guilfoyle’s bi-coastal arrangement took its toll on the relationship: “It’s no secret that they have been leading separate lives,” the source said. “She’s on one coast, he’s on the other — how can you make a marriage work like that?” Another insider said the breakup was amicable: “The funny thing is, they both genuinely like each other, and they seem to get along. I mean, it’s not like there was any anger or screaming.”

Since their split, both parties have moved on to other relationships, and for Guilfoyle, her new partner is bringing her into the presidential spotlight.

Gavin Newsom and Kimberly Guilfoyle have moved on

Kimberly Guilfoyle got to know the Trump family while working in New York, especially when she joined Fox News in 2006. According to The Washington Post, she attended charity events that the Trumps also attended, and her son, Ronan, from her second marriage to Eric Villency, attended the same school as Donald Trump Jr.’s daughter, Kai.

Guilfoyle no longer works for Fox News, but according to The New York Times, she is dating Don Jr. The couple was spotted together soon after Don Jr. and his wife of 12 years, Vanessa, announced their divorce in 2008.

Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom has remarried and become governor of California. According to the governor’s website, Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, is a filmmaker devoted to changing limiting cultural norms and gender stereotypes. She wrote, directed and produced three documentaries: Miss Representation, The Mask You Live In, and The Great American Lie. Instead of first lady, she prefers the title of first partner of California.
