Sir Tom Jones, 80, reflected on a podcast hosted by Cerys Matthews about the first time he played the raunchy song to his daughter-in-law. The catchy tune performed in collaboration with German DJ and record producer Mousse T included suggestive lyrics about sex.

I can turn you on?

Cerys asked Sir Tom: “Did you just have that sense of humour like hell, I’m going to go with this?”

He responded: “I went on it for the structure of the song, the song sounded commercial, and it sounded like something I could sing.

“And so the difference was, it was I’m a sex bomb and I could turn you on.”

He added: “So my daughter-in-law Donna, she said, ‘Do you really want to sing that? You know I’m a sex bomb, and I can turn you on?’

Sir Tom, who was 60 at the time of the song’s release, agreed that Donna may have had a point.

“I said, ‘Well that is what the song says’, she said, ‘Well what if you flip it and said you’re a sex bomb and you turn me on’. So that made a hell of a difference.”

The song went on to be a smash hit across Europe and reinforced Tom’s reputation as a ladies man.

When the singer was married to his wife Linda, he admitted to sleeping with 250 different women.

Sir Tom, however, has maintained that despite his indiscretions, he always saw Linda as the true love of his life

He wrote in his autobiography that he “never had that feeling for anyone else, I don’t think you can fall in love more than once”.

The star said of his wife: “She’s the most important thing in my life.

“An unbelievable woman. Linda is the love of my life and she still is, even though she doesn’t look like she used to. I don’t look like I did, either, but I try my best.

“When you’re face to face with somebody, you realise that time has gone on but when you’re on the phone we’re both young again.

“You’re not looking at one another, I’m looking at an old picture I carry around with me and leave by the bed.”

Linda passed away following a short battle with cancer in April 2016; the pair have one son, Mark Woodward.

Sir Tom met his long time love in their home town of Pontypridd in Wales.

He revealed on the podcast: “We started playing kiss-chase. I felt different when I kissed her, and she felt the same way.

“We started dancing together when we were 15. She would look great. She was the best-looking girl around there and we got together. It was magic.”

The singer reportedly said he had sex with potentially 250 groupies a year at the height of his fame.

Sir Tom has not liked to discuss it often, telling US TV: “I don’t think it’s important. It’s not what has made me. It’s not what got you there.”
