Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals schedule: Which musical is being streamed this week?

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Universal have teamed up to launch an amazing new platform. On it, his beloved musicals will be shown for free for 24-48 hours, starting with a premiere on Friday night. With some huge musicals having already had their time on YouTube, which musical is coming to The Shows Must Go On next?

The first show to be released on the channel was the 2000 adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, starring Donny Osmond in the title role.

This version also starred Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough and Joan Collins.

Alongside the performance, other videos including interviews with the composer himself, cast, and behind the scenes clips were featured on the channel.

However, fans had to act fast, as the musical was only live on the channel for 48 hours.

This will be the way in which each show is released: one show a week will be uploaded for either a 24 or 48-hour period for free to enjoy from living rooms all over the world.

Just in time for Easter, the show to be released on the channel was Jesus Christ Superstar, which was made available on Good Friday.

The version of Jesus Christ Superstar was the arena version, which starred Tim Minchin, Chris Moyles and Melanie C.

The next two shows came from the same Lloyd Webber universe, with Love Never Dies following on from The Phantom of the Opera.

Since then a medley performance has graced the channel, his ‘disaster musica’ By Jeeves, and now the classic, Cats, is arriving on the channel for just 24 hours.

In a video uploaded to the channel to welcome fans, Lloyd Webber said: “Hi everybody, I’m Andrew Lloyd Webber and I’m here to tell you that Universal has come with up with the idea of a whole series called The Shows Must Go On! which is about musicals going from stage to screen.”

What is Cats?

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats is one of the most famous musicals of all time.

The show first arrived on the West End stage in 1981 and became a worldwide sensation, opening on Broadway not long after.

‘Memory’, one of its many classic songs, became a smash hit song, and since then Cats has smashed records and most recently was made into a movie, though this did not gain nearly as much praise as the stage show.

The version coming online boasts an all-star cast headed by Elaine Paige and Sir John Mills, as well as breathtaking visuals and the full digital sound of an eighty piece orchestra.

The story of Cats is somewhat confusing, but is based on the collection of poems from T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the “Jellicle choice,” deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

Cats will be available on The Shows Must Go On YouTube channel at 7pm on Friday, May 15 for 24 hours
