Cancer exists in a multitude of forms, each characterised by a different set of symptoms. The disease is understood as the result of the uncontrolled proliferation of malignant cells that can encroach on neighbouring limbs and organs unless stopped. Detecting the disease early significantly increases the chances of curative treatment. One early sign of four different types of cancer may include night sweats.

According to Healthline, night sweats can be an early symptom of leukaemia, lymphoma, bone cancer, liver cancer.

The health body states: “Night sweats are unpleasant, but most of the time they’re harmless. It’s unclear why some types of cancer cause night sweat.

“This may happen because your body is trying to fight cancer. Hormone level changes may also be a cause.

“When cancer causes a fever, your body may sweat excessively as it tries to cool down.

“In some cases, night sweats occur due to cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, drugs that alter hormones and morphine.”

People who experience this symptom may wake up to find their bedding is damp.

Night sweats are often characterised by excessive perspiration, increased heart rate, and chills, which occur while one is asleep.

But like most cancer symptoms, the vast majority of cases are caused by nonmalignant disorders.

Cancer Research UK adds: “Sweating can be a symptom of cancer or maybe due to cancer treatment. It can be very distressing. It can also be embarrassing if you are in a social situation.”

The health body explains that night sweats may result from sudden fluctuations in hormone levels triggered by the disease itself.

What’s more, with breast cancer, women may be at a greater risk of early menopause, which is characterised by hot flushes and sweats.

Certain foods, such as alcohol and caffeine may trigger sweating by dilating the blood vessels inside the skin.

Occasionally, eating spicy foods or large meals at night can also be the cause of sweating, so these are best avoided if you suffer from night sweats regularly.

How to avoid cancer Making simple lifestyle changes can go a long way to reduce the risk of cancer.

Staying lean, for example, may significantly lower the risk of cancer, with studies suggesting obesity increases the risk of many forms of the disease.

Reducing the consumption of certain carcinogenic foods, such as saturated fat and red meat, can lower the risk of colon cancer and prostate cancer.

Fruits and vegetables, on the hands, may stave off the condition thanks to their potent antioxidants.

Antioxidants are important in cancer prevention because they target oxidative stress, a hallmark of many diseases.

Increasing intake of foods rich in vitamins and nutrients may therefore protect healthy cells in the body from harm.

Foods with the highest concentrations of antioxidants have been proven the most effective at slowing cancer growth too.

What’s more, undertaking regular exercise may reduce the risk of cancer by lowering sex hormones such as insulin and strengthening the immune system.
