According to body language expert Judi James, Sarah Ferguson’s relationships are rather “rose-tinted”. However, her claims that she and the late Princess Diana were “best friends” stack up. Judi spoke to Express.co.uk about Fergie’s most “fun” friendship in the Royal Family.

Judi told Express.co.uk: “Fergie’s relationships have always been rather rose-tinted.

“She refers to the late Queen as her ‘true mother’ and describes her ex-husband in the most glowing terms.

“But when she speaks of Princess Diana as her ‘best friend’ there are the photographs to back that claim up, albeit for a limited space of time.”

Indeed, there are several photos of the two giggling mischievously, conversing intimately and beaming at each other.

Judi continued: “The friendship might not have lasted for long but when it did it burned bright, making Diana and Fergie look like the dream team of Windsor wives.”

The fun friendship between the two royal brides appeared to give the pair some respite from the pressures of royal life.

Judi said: “When the pair appeared together their playfulness and fun became obvious and many of their gestures looked straight from the playground, like Diana’s behind-the-hand-giggling and Fergie’s love of gurning.”

She observed that Fergie brought out a playful side in Diana that only one other royal could – a young Prince Harry.

“They always looked on the brink of exploding into laughter and much of that was down to Fergie,” Judi noticed.

“Like Harry, she was able to trigger Diana’s love of laughter and fun.

“The air of demure, catwalk-model elegance that Diana had acquired since her marriage evaporated when she was with Fergie, while Fergie’s body language shows how much she adored being ‘best friends’ with this world-famous icon.”

However, she was seen as a bit of a “bad influence” on Charles’ bride and the japes between them were not always well-received.

Judi claimed: “Sadly, like many things that Sarah does, things went a little too far and she was seen as a bad influence on Diana, no matter how happy and carefree Diana was finally looking as a team of two.

“The bum-poking with the brollies at Ascot was deemed to be unsuitable behaviour and the way Diana pretended to fall over onto her friend during the photo call on the royal skiing holiday prompted a very old-fashioned look from an irritated Prince Charles, who clearly did not share the joke.”

But according to the body language expert, the young friends had a very mutually beneficial dynamic.

Judi said: “Fergie brought a lot to this relationship but, according to legend, Sarah only married into the Firm because Diana pushed her for Andrew’s wife.

“And with Diana already established as one of the most popular royals, Sarah had no problem integrating into her new family.

“Philip and Charles might not have been fans but with Diana on her side, Sara had the golden ticket pass to the top level of the royal family.”

One main benefit of the friendship for Diana was that Fergie – who was just two years her senior – allowed her to be more authentically herself in the institution.

Judi explained: “Since her marriage at nineteen she had been made isolated and miserable by her royal life.

“She had the heart of the public but no one to share that platform with. In many ways, she had been made to grow up too quickly.

“Fergie’s arrival allowed Diana a chance to act like the normal teenager/young woman she had never had the chance to be.”
