What could a home possibly offer for a price tag of a quarter of a billion dollars?

A penthouse apartment in New York has been listed with price hopes of $US250 million ($A379.3 million), and could soon be the most expensive home in the US.

It’s among a string of luxury properties for sale to an ultra-exclusive clientele around the world, and comes complete with every mod con imaginable.

The newly built penthouse is atop Central Park Tower, which lays claim to being the tallest residential building in the world. Although Dubai’s Burj Khalifa is taller, it is a mixed-use building that includes hotel accommodation.

Its height means the Billionaire’s Row pad offers unobstructed views over Central Park and across Manhattan.

Over three levels, it includes seven bedrooms, nine and a half bathrooms, a private ballroom with access to a terrace and catering kitchen, grand salon, media room, private elevator and study.

Time will tell if even the most elite buyers will pay the asking price. One local luxury agent told The Wall Street Journal the asking price was a “fantasy”.

The US record stands at $US238 million in the nearby Central Park South tower.

What else is for sale to deep-pocketed buyers? Head out of the city to the Hamptons and a pair of waterfront holiday homes are listed in a combined offering for $US150 million.
