Golf and lockdown: Can you play golf, is golf exercise?

Coronavirus has had a devastating impact on sporting events worldwide. From the Olympics being postponed until 2021, the NBA season being suspended to the Premier league being placed on hold, there seems to be very little for sport-lovers to tune into.

On Monday evening, Boris Johnson addressed the nation with some life-changing news.

The UK is now on lockdown, and everyone must stay at home unless they are shopping for essentials, seeking medical help, going to work, or getting one form of exercise a day.

Mr Johnson gave the examples of walking, cycling, and running. But what about golf? Can you play golf on lockdown?

Can you play golf during lockdown in the UK?

No, you cannot play golf on your local golf course during lockdown.

Golf courses across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are closing in line with the Government’s latest advice.

You might think that social distancing while playing was enough, but it is not.

A statement from a spokesperson for England Golf said: “Keeping golf courses open is simply no longer compatible with the updated policy of government which is designed to save lives in a time of national emergency.”

Scottish Golf has warned golfers in Scotland to “refrain from golfing until further notice”.

Wales Golf’s statement read: “It is clear that golf clubs, courses and facilities must close with immediate effect.”

The Golfing Union of Ireland has closed courses in Northern Ireland, but are waiting for government guidance regarding the courses in Republic of Ireland.

Why can’t you play golf during lockdown?

One form of exercise outside of the house is allowed a day.

This could be alone or with one member of your household.

On this trip, you must stick to the social distancing guidelines and remain two metres away from anyone you encounter.

All non-essential services and public spaces are to be closed, and golf seems to fall into this category.

Alongside this, Mr Johnson clearly warned: “You should not be meeting friends. If your friends ask you to meet, you should say no.

“You should not be meeting family members who do not live in your home.”

How can I play golf during lockdown?

You can’t play golf at any course in the UK, but that doesn’t stop you from getting your fix in the garden.

If you are lucky enough to have a private garden, you can practise your swing as much as you like, or you could purchase a golf net online.

If you live in a household with other people who like to play golf, you could have chipping competitions between you.

But for now, golf courses are off limits.
