Heart attack: The worst foods to consume if you want to slash your risk of the condition

A heart attack happens when something blocks the blood flow to the heart and it doesn’t receive enough oxygen that it requires. Heart attacks are also called myocardial infarctions. “Myo” means muscle, “cardial” refers to the heart and “infarction” means death of tissue because of a lack of blood supply. Death of tissue can cause lasting damage to the heart. In order to reduce one’s risk of having a heart attack, avoiding a certain food group is strongly suggested.

There are clear symptoms of a heart attack that require immediate medical attention.

A feeling of pressure, tightness, pain, squeezing or aching in the chest or arms that spreads to the neck, jaw or back can be a sign that a person is having a heart attack.

Possible symptoms of a heart attack include coughing, nausea, vomiting, crushing chest pain, dizziness and shortness of breath.

The pain from a heart attack can be described as a constant one, although occasionally the pain can come and go.

To avoid this painful and scary condition, one’s diet could make all the difference.

The heart muscle needs a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood. The coronary arteries provide the heart with this critical blood supply.

If a person has coronary artery disease, the arteries become narrow and blood flow can’t flow as well as it should.

When the blood supply is blocked, this is when a heart attack ensues. Fat, calcium, proteins and inflammatory cells build up in the arteries to form plaques.

These plaques deposits are hard on the outside and soft and mushy on the inside.

Certain food groups tend to be very high in calories and fat. Over time, this can cause arteries to become blocked and raise the risk of a heart attack.

Eating a diet which is unhealthy and high in fat significantly increases a person’s risk of having a heart attack.

Fried, fatty foods will make hardening of arteries worse and increase the risk of serious health complications.

Continuing to eat high-fat foods will cause more fatty plaques to build up in the arteries.

This is because fatty foods contain an unhealthy type of cholesterol.

The NHS said: “Making lifestyle changes is the most effective way to prevent having a heart attack.

“There are three main steps you can take to help prevent a heart attack which include eating a healthy, balanced diet, not smoking and trying to keep your blood pressure at a healthy level.

“Eating an unhealthy diet that is high in fat will make hardening arteries worse and increase your risk of a heart attack.”

Foods you can eat to reduce risk

A well-balanced diet should include at least five portions of fruit and veg a day is recommended by The British Heart Foundation.

It advises: “Try to vary the types of fruit and veg you eat. They can be fresh, frozen, dried or tinned.

“Pure unsweetened fruit juice, pulses and beans count as a portion, but they only make up a maximum of one of your five a day, however much you eat in one day.

“Try to eat plenty of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta, some milk and dairy products, some meat, fish, eggs, beans and only a small amount of foods and drinks high in sugar.”
