Martin Lewis: Money expert bottom line on coronavirus refunds advice ‘you have a right’

One viewer called in to ask Martin if she could get a refund after it seemed likely her wedding would be cancelled. Martin Lewis responded to her concern she might lose 95 percent of the amount she’s paid for her wedding venue because of coronavirus.

However, Martin told the woman she is eligible for a full refund, after a new government decision.

Martin said: “If we get to July and you can’t have the wedding, and asking them to postpone it – there isn’t necessarily a ban on it but it’s difficult, but if you get to July and you cannot have the wedding i.e. it’s cancelled then according to the Competition and Markets Authority, you have a right to a refund.

“Now this issue applies on holiday accommodations, it applies on nurseries, it applies on travel, it applies everywhere else.

“The problem is, firms are not giving people refunds.”

The Money Saving Expert went on to explain: “In some places, light flights, it’s clear cut.

However, Martin told the woman she is eligible for a full refund, after a new government decision.

“If your flight is cancelled you get the option of a refund and that’s a cash refund.

“In other areas where there is no regulation then the firms say, contractually we don’t have to give you the refund.”

However, for those affected by this, there is now a life line.

Martin said: “Now what happened last week is the Competition and Markets Authority, which is a government regulator, said look whether they just can’t provide the goods or service or whatever you can’t get the service even though it’s available because of lockdown rules, or whether they can’t provide the service even though it’s available because of lockdown rules, you should get a refund, an absolute refund.”
