Take a Closer Look at Google’s First-Ever Retail Store in NYC

Google has released new photos and video of its first-ever physical retail store, set to open its doors this week in New York City‘s downtown neighborhood of Chelsea.

First announced last month, the new space will offer a range of products made by Google and will also provide shoppers with an immersive experience showcasing how the company’s products and services work together seamlessly. Experts will be on deck to help customers out with hardware and software questions, and users will be able to shop the tech company’s range on its website and pick up their orders in-store.

Google said that it chose Chelsea as the location of its flagship retail location because it views the store as “a natural extension of our longtime commitment to the city.” The space is intended to be part of Google’s urban campus in Chelsea, as the company employs over 11,000 New York City residents.

On Wednesday, Google dropped some additional information and photos showing the store in action ahead of its official June 17 opening.Google’s Ivy Ross and Nathan Allen said in a press release that the space was meant to subvert the notion that modern technology is a cold medium:

“We wanted our first store to reflect the same approach we take to designing our products: making sure they’re always helpful to people. The result is a space we believe is warm and inviting, while providing new ways to celebrate and experience Google through our phones, displays, speakers, wearables and more.”

Sustainability is also at the forefront of the space’s design, mirroring the brand’s commitment to integrating sustainable materials into its products. The veneer on the walls is made of responsibly-sourced hickory and the space’s light fixtures are energy efficient.

At the main entrance stands a 17-foot tall circular glass structure that has been dubbed the Google Imagination Space, where customers can interact with custom screens and utilize Google Translate services. “As you speak to the exhibit, you’ll experience real-time translation of your speech into 24 languages simultaneously, and then learn how this all happens on the back end using several Google technologies,” Ross and Allen explain. The store also purposely invites hands-on interaction and features comfortable couches in a living room-like setting that is dotted with Google products.
