There’s a ‘rocky road’ ahead for Zara (Elisabeth Dermot Walsh) and Daniel (Matthew Chambers), the Ross and Rachel of Doctors, after viewers saw them announce to staff at The Mill that they had decided to give their relationship another go during the 20th anniversary episode.
The special hour-long episode saw characters take part in a ‘documentary’ about a day in the life at The Mill, showing how its staff pull together in emergency situations.
There were tears, laughter and a few trips down memory lane with mentions of characters like Mrs Tembe and Heston Carter, and the return of Diane Keen as Julia Parsons.
It emerged that Zara and Daniel had rekindled their relationship once more and went public as part of the episode’s happy ending.
But while things may be rosy for them now, Elizabeth warned that their newfound happiness is going to be put under strain. It is a soap after all…
She explained: ‘It’s always a rocky road. It was strange watching [the 20th anniversary] because I was smiling for most of that episode and not grumpy and happy. It was very uncomfortable.
‘It wouldn’t be interesting if it wasn’t a rocky road. That’s just the nature of their relationship. There’s always opposition going on.
‘They had such a long time apart. They spent a year breaking up. That was amazing to play.
‘We always talk about actors having to come in and make a character fully formed in a very short form, but we get to play for years and years – a decade – a long story and a development of the characters. That’s an absolute pleasure. You can explore every facet of a relationship.
‘So to be doing their break up and break down for a year was exhausting but such a pleasure to play long form. And I think the road back is going to take a just as twisty path.’
