Mackenzie (played by Lawrence Robb) was overjoyed when Charity (Emma Atkins) made things official with him over the Christmas period on Emmerdale after months of wondering whether they were a good fit. The return of Charity’s ex-lover Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) set the cat amongst the pigeons, but the couple remained united regardless. Though when they struggle to get along in next week’s episode of the ITV soap and with the mother-of-four turning to her former love interest for advice, it seems she is completely blindsided by another problem Mackenzie is trying to deal with.

The drama begins next week on the weeknight serial drama when Charity heads off dressed up for a play date with her young son.

When she’s away, her eldest child Ryan Stocks (James Moore) gets hounded by numerous calls and when he does eventually answer, his whole world is turned upside down.

Needing his mother to support him, the devastated villager can’t get hold of his mother as she rejects his calls to her.

As Mackenzie is the only other person he feels comfortable opening up to, Ryan explains his adoptive mother, Irene Stocks (Eithne Browne) has passed away.

Knowing how serious the situation is, Mackenzie also tries to get hold of his lover but she is more interested in spending time with Vanessa and her son, Johnny Woodfield.

Charity rejects her boyfriend’s call and so with no word from her, Mackenzie decides he will drive Ryan up to see his adopted brother.

However, knowing Charity needs to know what is going on, he implores Ryan to speak with his mother about Irene’s death.

Unfortunately, Mackenzie beats Ryan to it as he is the one who ends up telling Charity about the news and she lashes out for not being told sooner.

When she starts reflecting on her own actions though, she realises she has hurt both her son and her lover by ignoring them.

Vanessa is furious her former lover has put her new relationship on the line and storms off after hearing what’s happened.

Team Vanity or team Mackity?

It seems this is the beginning of Mackenzie venturing back down a dark road as he ends up turning to the bottle for comfort.

Since his arrival in the village, it’s never been suggested he has had an issue with alcohol but his current relationship woes could see him become more dependant on it.

He could have had a problem with drinking when he was younger but learnt to control how much he drinks in recent years.

The way things are going with Charity, it could be a major trigger and he could quickly become a fully-fledged alcoholic.

Next week’s scenes could be a strong indicator of this as he starts interacting with Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) and crosses the line.

Mackenzie begins explaining all about his dramatic relationship life but at the same time, Vanessa encourages her former lover to fix things with her boyfriend.

By the time Charity does end up finding her boyfriend, he is in no fit state as it appears he has drunk himself into oblivion.

She watches as he walks with Dawn and when he spots Charity talking to Vanessa, he lunges as Billy Fletcher’s (Jay Kontzle) partner.

When he discovers what happened, Billy is furious but he could be the one who discovers the secret heartache Mackenzie has been hiding for years.

Wanting to explain himself, the troubled character could delve into his murky past and how drinking has always been a release for him.

He could make Billy promise he won’t tell a soul about his alcoholism but as Mackenzie becomes progressively worse, will Dawn’s partner have no choice but to tell Charity?

She might not care as before the end of the week, the couple will have split up over Mackenzie’s betrayal and be unwilling to forgive him.

Vanessa meddles in their relationship again as she tells Mackenzie his girlfriend was coming over to apologise when she saw him with Dawn.

Devastated he has caused them to split, Mackenzie could find himself destroying his life in the village as his demons come back to haunt him.

However, will anyone be able to help him with his problem or will he be left fighting his battle on his own?

Teasing what’s to come for this troublesome love triangle over the next few months, producer Laura Shaw spoke with Express.co.uk and other media about their future.

Laura said: “Vanessa is back and obviously that is going to set the cat amongst the pigeons for Mack and Charity.

“Will we see Charity and Vanessa back together in 2022, or will we see Vanessa head off in a new direction maybe?

“I think it’s going to be time for people to decide whether they are team ‘Vanity’ or team ‘Mackity’.

“Charity is also going to be affected by some heartbreaking news involving Ryan that is going to see some huge emotional scenes play out between mother and son. This is going to have some influence over Charity’s relationship.”

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode airing on Thursdays at 8pm.
