Carole Malone has slammed a Devon pub for putting up a ‘locals only’ sign to keep out tourists. Speaking on Jeremy Vine on 5, she accused the pub of “snobbery’” and “prejudice.” The King of Prussia Inn in Kingsbridge has set up a chalkboard sign on the pavement that reads “LOCALS ONLY” and adds “Due to restrictions by Boris!! He has made a small pub smaller.”

Ms Malone criticised the pub as the Jeremy Vine on 5 panel discussed the sign.

She said: “It makes zero business sense to ban tourists who come to your town with pocket loads of cash to spend.

“It makes zero sense to ban them.

“After Covid, this is the time when the hospitality industry is gagging to get back, is gagging to open the doors.

“And here is a pub that is picking who can come in.

She added: “You know the landlady, Sara Roberton, is quoted as saying ‘it’s not [that] we’re being unfriendly.’ Well, you are actually, you’re being incredibly unfriendly.

“People who live in coastal areas, and I know this because I live in one, they get very snotty about who comes.

“And the fact is whether you like it or not, tourists hold up lots of coastal areas for many, many months of the year.

“The holiday starts in March and goes on until October.

“To have this kind of snobbery, this kind of inverted snobbery or prejudice seems insanity to me, and it’s not good business sense.”

Brits have been allowed to visit pubs and restaurants indoors since restrictions were eased on May 17.

The sign went viral after a visitor shared a photo of the sign on Twitter, arguing that it was unfriendly to tourists.

Landlady Sara Roberton said that she had first tried to explain to visitors that the pub did not have enough room, but that no one would listen.

She said: “We are such a small pub. I’m fine with my regulars, they are here all year-round. I don’t think my regulars should have to go without a seat because of visitors.

“I’m not opposed to them sitting outside, we’ve had a few in who asked if they can take a drink outside and we’re fine with that. It’s not because we’re unfriendly, we just don’t have space.

“It’s our regulars who come in all year round who are important to us. I know other businesses in the town need the holidaymakers but we are not a tourist business.”
