Riverdale spoilers: Jughead returns from the dead in mind-blowing scheme to expose the Stonies – The Sun

Riverdale’s latest storyline marks one of its biggest twists to date.

This season on Riverdale, the question of Jughead Jones' (Cole Sprouse) fate has been in focus.

The most recent episode of The CW series brought both answers and confusion for many fans.

The episode kicks off with a battle of wills between Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Donna (Sarah Desjardins) and it doesn't take long for tensions to reach fever pitch.

Betty planted an item belonging to Jughead in Donna’s room, which was followed up by Donna manipulating Jughead’s father, FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), into believing that Betty, Archie (AJ Kapa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) had actually killed Jughead.

However, it later emerged that a rock that was supposed to be covered in Jughead's blood, was instead covered in fake blood, leading to their release.

This lead Donna to believe that Jughead was still alive – and it turns out she was right.

Betty’s elaborate scheme of pretending her and Archie were hooking up made Donna follow Betty into the bunker in the woods.

Betty had hoped that Donna would lose her cool after seeing the two making out, but things soon took a baffling turn.

As it turns out, Jughead was still fact alive, hiding under the cot that Archie and Betty were smooching on.

Jughead had been hiding their ever since he faked his death.

It’s also revealed that pretty much everyone was in on the set up- the parents, friends and people from the small town.

All of this, it's revealed, was simply to expose the Stonies and get to the root of the crimes they’d committed, including the murder of Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer).

Drama aside, Jughead’s staged death isn’t a total surprise. Most fans assumed that Jughead was indeed alive, considering he’s such a major character on the series.

The real surprise came when it was hinted that Betty and Archie’s ‘fake’ kiss could be something more.

Archie is shown to have almost sent a text saying ‘I’d be happy to kiss you anytime’, but he refrains, implying that maybe his feelings may be muddled.

This insane plot will probably only thicken, so fans are likely set for more twists and turns this season.

Riverdale airs on The CW every Wednesday at 8pm.
