Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) has been struggling to come to terms with his additional hearing loss in EastEnders, but boyfriend Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) has been by his side every step of the way to support him — something which Ben finally acknowledged during tonight’s episode, as he revealed his true feelings.
Upset over Dennis’ (Bleu Landau) death — not to mention the fact that Sharon (Letitia Dean) had banned him from the funeral service — Ben lashed out at Callum once more during yesterday’s instalment, before storming off.
Tonight, a groggy and tired Callum awoke to find that Ben wasn’t in the bed beside him, and he momentarily panicked, as he exited the bedroom to find his beau planning a birthday surprise for him on the living room floor.
In an effort to keep whatever Ben was doing a surprise, Callum closed his eyes, and allowed Ben to speak about when he had his first hearing aid fitted — revealing that Phil (Steve McFadden) never asked about it.
Callum insisted that — Phil or no Phil — Ben always has him, before reminding him of how wonderful he truly is.
Ben was genuinely touched by his boyfriend’s care and consideration — not to mention patience — and, as a result, he took a big leap, and revealed that he’s in love with him.
It took a moment for the words to truly sink in for Callum — in a scene that was played wonderfully by the sublime Tony Clay — and once they did, he opened his eyes and smiled at his boyfriend.
As Ben attempted to backtrack, Callum demonstrated just how much he loved Ben, by saying ‘I love you’ via sign language.
Ben dropped what he was doing and intensely kissed Callum and — in that moment — all was right in the world.
No, you’re crying. Again.
