Strictly Come Dancing has become a staple of Saturday night television, with stars from the worlds of sport, music, entertainment, cooking and much, much more wanting to sign up. As of yet, no Line of Duty star has stepped foot onto the infamous dance floor but later this year, that could all be set to change. According to reports, bosses of the BBC show have their eyes on their “dream signing” in the form of Ryan Pilkington star, Gregory Piper, 23.

Gregory has been an integral player in season six of the corrupt police drama, working as a mole for Organised Crime Groups from within the police department.

The actor’s character, Ryan, was a part of one of the show’s greatest cliffhangers at the end of episode five when he and Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) faced each other in a nail-biting showdown.

Despite his villainous alter-ego, the star of the small screen has gained a whole legion of fans since he first appeared on the programme almost 10 years ago.

In just two weeks time, the latest run of the high-octane drama will come to an end but it seems Gregory is already in high demand.

A source explained: “The pinnacle for Strictly bookers is someone well known but also someone who is on the BBC, and Gregory ticks both of those boxes.”

The insider said because Gregory’s popularity has only recently increased, the actor might think the move into reality television is a “bit too soon”.

“But producers are certainly keen and his name has been bandied around a lot as a dream signing,” they told The Sun.

Express.co.uk has contacted a Strictly Come Dancing spokesperson for comment on the reports.

However, it seems Gregory isn’t the only Line of Duty star whose name has entered the rumour mill to join the 2021 line-up.

According to Betway bookmakers, it seems there are some other leading actors who could take one of the coveted spots.

Currently, it seems Kate star Vicky McClure, 37, and Steve Arnott actor Martin Compton, 36, are at the top of the billing.

Betray spokesperson Chad Yeomans said: “With nearly six months until Strictly Come Dancing dazzles its way back onto our screens, rumours are already beginning to swirl about who will be foxtrotting onto the ballroom floor.

“With a host of names in the mix, Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure is priced at 11/10, while her co-star Martin Compston is priced at 9/2.”

At the moment, this is just speculation but could 2021 be the year fans finally get to see a Line of Duty star partake in the competition?

Taking to Twitter, fans have been sharing their thoughts on some of the Line of Duty stars potentially signing up.

One wrote in response to the reports Gregory was on the bosses dream list: “I mean that’d be good, but imagine Ted Hastings on Strictly… #LineofDuty6 #HastingsdoesStrictly #givethepeoplewhattheywant.”

Another posted: “Everyone is rumoured for #Strictly every year, but I would so be here for this! #LineOfDuty.”

A third fan of the show commented: “Hastings [Adrain Dunbar] needs to be on Strictly next year! #LineOfDuty.”

Bosses will be wanting to pull out all the stops for the upcoming season after it was impacted by the pandemic last year.

Not only did fewer celebrities sign up but the number of weeks was cut down to ensure all social distancing rules were adhered to.

Blackpool week was also taken out of the calendar but reports are suggesting this could well be on the agenda if the number of coronavirus cases continues to decrease.

It has not yet been confirmed whether judge Bruno Toniloi, 65, will be returning to the panel after being absent from proceedings last season.

Strictly Come Dancing is scheduled to return later this year on BBC One.
