The images have emerged account named 'Zuzou Bingbing Travel Photography' on Weibo – a Chinese microblogging platform similar to Twitter.
The week forestry authorities in the tea-growing city of Pu'er revealed the incident happened there.
But they denied the elephants were drunk and officials shared footage of the what they say is the moment the two happy but sober beasts lying down back-to-back in order to "rest".
Long Yunhai, deputy director of the Menghai Forestry and Grassland Administration, said photos showing so-called "drunk elephants" were "not true".
"There have indeed been recent reports of 14 Asian elephants entering villages and damaging vats of grain alcohol, but whether they drank any alcohol is hard to determine," he said.
